Gift Planning & Bequests

William A. Schnader Society

The William A. Schnader Society honors and celebrates the individuals who have exhibited a special commitment to Franklin & Marshall through gift planning. This includes bequests via will, binding testamentary pledges, charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities, and insurance policy, IRA and retirement plan beneficiary designations.

These gifts can be unrestricted, enabling the College's Trustees to put them to the highest and best use when they pass to F&M. Gifts also can be restricted to a special purpose, such as creating or adding to an existing need-based scholarship fund or endowing a professorship in a specific major. In these cases, consultation with the College is recommended to ensure your wishes are understood and thus can be followed.

The Schnader Society is named after William Schnader, Class of 1908, who was salutatorian of his class, graduated Phi Beta Kappa and earned his law degree with honors from the University of Pennsylvania. He founded the Philadelphia law firm known today as Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP and in 1926 was elected a Trustee of Franklin & Marshall.

He served for 42 years, including 10 years as chairman of the board, and directed much of his philanthropy to Franklin & Marshall. In 1958, Mr. Schnader created a charitable remainder trust that paid income to certain individuals during their lifetimes. The remainder of the trust came to F&M in 2002 and was added to the College's endowment.

We have honored Mr. Schnader's exemplary commitment by lending his name to this Society, which recognizes those devoted to the future of this special place.

Members of the Schnader Society are recognized with:

  • Special tribute events at Homecoming & Family Weekend and Alumni Weekend
  • Public acknowledgment for members who give permission to list their names
  • Periodic Schnader Society mailings and invitations
